As thousands of Nova Scotians return to their homes after a string of devastating wildfires forced them to flee last week, officials have begun offering free well-water testing kits.

However, as supplies have run low amid high demand for the kits, officials are urging residents to be patient.

“We know there is a great demand for the testing kits and supplies and they have run out in the HRM area…you should only get a test kit if you need it and only pick up that test kit when you are ready to use it – not in advance,” said Tory Rushton, minister of natural resources and renewables.

Meanwhile, crews continue to put out hot spots at the Barrington Lake fire in Shelbourne County, N.S. It is the only fire still out of control in the province, though officials say it is not growing.

Dave Rockwood, public information officer for Shelbourne County, said Tuesday that rain has not penetrated the ground well and is causing runoff, which is impacting firefighting efforts.

“At this point, we’re getting a lot of run-off so creeks and streams and lakes will definitely be filling up but we’re not confident at this point that it’s penetrating enough to cool everything in the ground,” Rockwood said.

“So that’s why we’re going to be sticking around this area for the foreseeable future until everything is safe for the residents to move back in.”
