Firefighters battling the wildfires raging across Nova Scotia are tired but are not “burned out,” according to Erica Fleck, director of Emergency Management for Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM).

“There are 1,000 firefighters in HRM between career and volunteer, and there’s only 100, just over 100 a day in the fire ground for that cycle,” she explained.

Scott Tingley, Manager of forest protection from the Halifax Department of Natural Resources and Renewables, added that while the province is “asking a lot” of firefighters, there are plans to cycle members out to avoid burnout.

The federal government has also approved a request for the Canadian Armed Forces to help Nova Scotia fight wildfires. International firefighters are also coming to the country to help with Canada’s “unprecedented” wildfire situation, as fires in eight jurisdictions prompt the evacuation of tens of thousands of people.
