Officials delivered another briefing Wednesday as wildfires continue to burn in Nova Scotia, where they reiterated the importance of following the no-burn rule.

Wednesday could be a “difficult day” for the crews fighting a fire in the Halifax area, as high temperatures and low humidity continue to pose a challenge, according to local officials. The Halifax-area fire is one of three out-of-control wildfires burning in the province, straining resources and forcing evacuations.

During an earlier press conference, Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston said that eight illegal burns were reported overnight that defied the provincewide fire ban. “I do not know what they’re thinking,” he said, adding that anyone defying the burn ban would face a $25,000 fine.

In an update Wednesday morning, David Steeves, a technician of forest resources with the Department of Natural Resources and Renewables, said the fire burning in the Tantallon and Hammonds Plains area has now grown to 837 hectares, an increase of nearly 50 hectares since the previous day.

“We attribute that to some of the fire behaviour that we did see yesterday, as well as some more accurate mapping on our behalf,” he said.
