Members of the Nova Scotia Liberal Party voted in Iain Rankin as their new leader on Saturday, after Premier Stephen McNeil announced last year he would be stepping down after nearly 15 years in the role. Rankin also becomes premier-designate of the province until he is sworn into the role, making him the 29th premier of Nova Scotia. He will be the youngest premier in the country at 37.

During his speech following his victory over Labi Kousoulis and Randy Delorey, Rankin said he wanted to be a premier for all Nova Scotians regardless of party.

He also spoke about his youth, after having positioned himself as a candidate for generational change, and said he believed winning the leadership election showed it was time for the next chapter in the party. He added that he seemed shell-shocked when he first took the stage after his victory because it was a "monumental" moment for his family but said he still believed he was going to win going into the election.
