The governing Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba named Heather Stefanson as their new leader on Saturday, making history as the first woman to lead the province.

The race pitted Stefanson, a member of the Legislative Assembly, against former MP Shelley Glover to replace former premier Brian Pallister who stepped down from the role earlier this year. Kelvin Goertzen has served as premier since Pallister left the post.

In her victory speech, Stefanson stressed that those who voted for either candidate had a place under the "blue tent." She also said while people in the past may not have felt they belonged in the party, "welcome to the new PC Party of Manitoba." She went on to outline some of her plans as leader, including "repairing" the relationship with Indigenous People, working on economic recovery, tackling the labour shortage and addressing concerns raised by COVID-19 in the health-care system.
