Nova Scotia Health Minister Michelle Thompson and provincial health authority CEO Karen Oldfield are expected to announce actions to improve care in emergency departments across the province on Wednesday.

Speaking to media on Tuesday, Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston said further actions are needed to address the province's struggling health-care system, following a health-care summit. Houston added to address the situation immediately, there are several initiatives that could be taken, which will be announced during the Wednesday press conference.

Nova Scotia’s opposition parties pushed Monday for more public accountability from the government over the province’s struggling hospital emergency departments. NDP Leader Claudia Chender called for Thompson and Oldfield to appear before the legislature’s health committee on Thursday — a request that was later turned down.

The Health Department said in an email that neither of the parties would be able to attend the health committee this week because they are “actively working on ways to support changes to our health-care system and in emergency departments.”

The call came amid public concern over the recent deaths of two patients after lengthy waits in Nova Scotia ERs — many of which are overcrowded and understaffed. On Tuesday, Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston and Thompson hosted a summit of health-care partners.
