Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Monday that the Canadian government is giving federal assistance to at least three provinces – Alberta, Nova Scotia and Quebec – in the wake of devastating wildfires that have forced thousands of people from their homes and caused widespread property damage.

Canada could see a “record” level of area burnt amid an “unprecedented” wildfire season this year and despite the “very serious projections,” the country is expected to have enough resources to cover the summer months, the prime minister said.

“If things get worse, we .. are developing contingency plans and we will, of course, make sure that we are there, whether it’s leaning more on international supports, whether it’s steading up other resources, we will be there to ensure that all Canadians are protected right through this summer,” he said.
