Trudeau, Ford announce AstraZeneca research, development investment in Mississauga, Ont. | FULL

Speaking in Mississauga, Ont., on Monday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced a new investment by pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca will bring 500 new jobs to Mississauga, Ontario. The company, known for being the developer of one of Canada’s approved COVID-19 vaccines, announced a major expansion of their research and development hub, as well as the creation of another new hub focusing on rare disease research.

“This expansion will create 500 more good middle class jobs here in the GTA,” Trudeau told reporters. “AstraZeneca is making this announcement in Canada because we have the talent, expertise and scientific ecosystem a leading company like AstraZeneca is looking for.”

Responding to a question about an earlier announcement on the Canadian government banning the use of the popular short-form video application TikTok on all government-issued mobile devices, Trudeau said that Canada takes both safety and security as well as freedom of expression “very seriously.” He added that “This may be a first step, it may be the only step we need to take. But every step of the way we're going to be making sure we're keeping Canadians safe.”

Trudeau also pushed back against a recent news report that alleges security officials urged the Liberal Party to rescind the nomination of one of its MPs. He said that "In a free democracy, it is not up to unelected security officials to dictate to political parties who can or cannot run," adding that “It's actually damaging to people's confidence in our democratic and political institutions.”
