Ontario Premier Doug Ford on Monday reacted to Prince Edward Island suspending use of the AstraZeneca vaccine, currently being used for those 18-39, and said they had been advised by the federal government and health officials the vaccine was still safe for those 55 and over.

He said if there is indeed health concerns for giving the vaccine to those under 55 he will not use it, but asked if those who have gotten the AstraZeneca vaccine through the pharmacy pilot have “rolled the dice,” he again stressed it is safe in the opinion of the province's medical experts for people 55 and over.

Ford spoke on the issue after announcing funding to help the tourism and hospitality industry as part of their 2021 budget announced last week, which included $100 million for a new one-time Ontario Tourism and Hospitality Small Business Support Grant $100 million for a one-time recovery program. He was joined by Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy and Tourism Minister Lisa MacLeod.

The premier also would not say if he planned to lower the age range for those who can get COVID-19 vaccines, instead encouraging people to continue to sign up who are 70 and over. He added that part of the reason they aren’t changing who can get the vaccine in part due to supply, saying they were frustrated the federal government could not give accurate timelines for vaccine delivery.

Ontario reported 2,094 cases of the novel coronavirus Monday, bringing the total number of cases in the province to 345,234.

It marked the fifth day in a row that the province has reported more than 2,000 cases. On Saturday, 2,453 cases were reported, which was the largest single-day increase in more than two months.

Ten new deaths were reported Monday, bringing the provincial death toll to 7,327.
