Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced on Monday that the first shipment of a “very small number” of COVID-19 vaccine doses could arrive in Ontario as early as next week.

The announcement comes as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also revealed that few Canadians could receive the country’s first coronavirus vaccine shots as early as next week.

The province's vaccine task force chair General Rick Hillier laid out on Monday the priorities of distribution of a vaccine, starting with the most vulnerable population of long-term care homes' residents and health care workers.

Ford said he doesn't believe in mandating a COVID-19 vaccine but he strongly encouraged people to get vaccinated for the protection of themselves and others.

Ontario has a total of 129,234 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 3,798 deaths since the pandemic began, as of Monday.
