Ontario Premier Doug Ford was in the Windsor-Essex region on Monday alongside Health Minister Christine Elliott to reaffirm the province's commitment of $9.8 million in funding to support the planning of the acute care hospital to be built in Tecumseh, Ont.

The hospital is expected to add more hospital beds and expand services for the region. The money was originally pledged in the government's 2021-22 budget in March.

“This new hospital means they can get the care they need, closer to home," Ford said.

Among the planned services are cancer care, complex trauma response, obstetrics, neurology and cardiology. The new facility will also have more single-patient rooms to increase patient privacy and reduce potential spread of infection. Urgent care and outpatient services are expected to remain at Windsor Regional Hospital's downtown campus.

The premier was also asked about why the province was keeping the paper proof of COVID-19 vaccination given the rollout of QR codes. Ford said as there are still people, such as some seniors, who may be unable to set up their QR code he wants to ensure the proof of vaccination is still accessible.
