Alberta's chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw announced Monday that the province would be temporarily pausing the use of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine in patients under 55.

According to Hinshaw, "this is a precautionary measure that is being taken across Canada."

The pause comes after "some rare instances of blood clots reported in Europe that require more investigation," Hinshaw said.

There have been no reported cases of these blood clots in Alberta or Canada, according to Hinshaw.

Hinshaw did ensure those under 55 who had already received the first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine they "are not considered to be at high risk of blood clots," but patients should monitor their health and seek medical help if they are concerned.

Alberta indentified 545 new cases of COVID-19 as of Hinshaw's update Monday, with 249 cases being variants of concern.
