Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Chilean President Gabriel Boric met on Monday in Ottawa, where they discussed bilateral relations.

They signed an agreement to promote gender equality and empower women including supporting policies that ensure women’s inclusion in COVID-19 economic recovery efforts, representation in leadership positions, wage parity and addressing gender-based violence.

Trudeau announced that Canada committed to co-sponsoring the Americas for the Protection of Ocean declaration with Chile, to protect migratory routes for sea animals and keep the oceans clean and healthy and preserve coastal ecosystems. Both leaders condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Trudeau was asked about Chinese statement warning Canada of any “risky provocations” towards China after Canada’s military accused Chinese fighter jets of buzzing its air patrol units during a U.N. mission. China said its actions were reasonable and professional” and that Canada threatens Chinese national security under the pretext of U.N. mission.

Trudeau rejected China’s justifications and described their actions as “irresponsible and provocative.”
