Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced three investments to help create more spaces and support early childhood educators both financially and in long-term security across Prince Edward Island (PEI) on Monday.

Beforehand, the prime minister addressed the ongoing devastation brought forward by wildfires in British Columbia and the Northwest Territories, criticizing Meta for depriving Canadians of local news related to the blazes, following their recent move to ban local news access across their platforms for users in Canada.

“This is Facebook's choice. We're simply saying that in a democracy, quality, local journalism matters, and it matters now more than ever before — when people are worried about their homes, worried about communities, worried about the worst summer for extreme weather events we've had in a long, long time,” Trudeau said.

Meta’s decision to block news access in Canada came after Bill C-18 became legislation. The law requires web giants, like Meta, to compensate news publishers for sharing their content.
