Lecce said he had seen the province's COVID-19 modelling numbers that are scheduled to be released on Monday and commented that they were "alarming." Lecce says there was a 117 per cent spike in cases among young people between Dec. 27 and Jan. 3 when schools were closed.

Schools in Ontario remain closed until at least Jan. 25.

Ontario reported 4,249 new cases of the coronavirus on Friday, a single-day record in the province.

Another 3,443 cases were reported early Saturday, bringing the total number of cases in the province to 211,837. Forty additional deaths announced Jan. 9 bring the provincial death toll to 4,922.
