Ontario's Education Minister Stephen Lecce announced Saturday that the province would be extending emergency child care benefits for front line workers for another two weeks which will also include increased eligibility to include those working for the CBSA, emergency shelters and children's aid society.
Lecce said he had seen the province's COVID-19 modelling numbers that are scheduled to be released on Monday and commented that they were "alarming." Lecce says there was a 117 per cent spike in cases among young people between Dec. 27 and Jan. 3 when schools were closed.
Schools in Ontario remain closed until at least Jan. 25.
Ontario reported 4,249 new cases of the coronavirus on Friday, a single-day record in the province.
Another 3,443 cases were reported early Saturday, bringing the total number of cases in the province to 211,837. Forty additional deaths announced Jan. 9 bring the provincial death toll to 4,922.
