Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced on Wednesday an investment of $115 million to train 8,200 new personal support workers in long-term care homes and community care sectors to improve conditions for long-term care residents across the province.

The funds include a training program for PSWs which will offer tuition-free training to 6,000 students to allow them to complete their studies in six months instead of eight.

Ford said his government is working with Ontario colleges to get the program running by April.

He also added that the funding will offer tuition assistance to nearly 2,200 students that are already completing a PSW program in Ontario colleges.

The province reported 1,054 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, bringing the provincial total to 296,173.
