Chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam said on Thursday that more than 40 million COVID-19 vaccine doses had been administered in Canada, which she said equates to 78 per cent of people over the age of 12 with at least one dose. 44 per cent of people age 12 and over are fully vaccinated, she added.

"This is great progress, and the benefits are mounting," Tam said.

COVID-19 daily case count trends have been slowing down for the past 14 days, as well as death counts due to COVID-19, with provinces in different stages of reopening.

Tam also addressed the Lambda COVID-19 variant that was recently detected Canada. She said they do not yet know the full impact of the variant, which was first identified in Peru in the summer of 2020, but that it’s “important to now work out whether the Lambda variant has any impact on our vaccines.”

"Given the low number of cases now, the majority of those cases will have genetic screening and genetic sequencing being done," she stated.
