Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced on Friday that the province is pushing forward earlier with second COVID-19 vaccinations due to a stable supply of vaccines, and will begin by prioritizing those aged 80 and older.

“Based on what we know about upcoming shipments, everyone in Ontario who wants a vaccine could be fully vaccinated by the end of August,” Ford said, adding that “Ontario is ready to deliver a two-dose summer."

The province said people 80 years and older can start to reschedule for an earlier appointment on May 31, while those 70 and older can book an earlier appointment beginning June 14.

Ontarians between the ages of 12 and 25 years old will become eligible for a second shot in early August, ahead of the start of school.

Officials said Friday that the province has completed first doses for 65 per cent of the adult population. More than 8.6 million doses of vaccine have been administered and nearly 625,000 Ontarians are fully vaccinated with two shots.
