Canada's chief public health officer Dr. Njoo announced on Thursday that the federal authorities have agreed with a National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) recommendation that the time between first and second doses of the COVID-19 vaccine can be extended up to four months.

Njoo said the rationale for extending the time will allow for many more people to access the first dose sooner and provide some level of protection. Once every province and territory have been offered the first dose then the second dose can be administered within the 4-month interval.

To date, more than seven million vaccine doses have been administered in Canada. Of those age 80 and over, 81 per cent have received the first dose while ten per cent have received a second dose. Those between the ages of 70-79, 53 per cent have received a first dose while two per cent have received the second dose.

Maj-Gen. Dany Fortin said Thursday that if other approved vaccines are added to the mix and if they are administered as rapidly as possible, the rollout “will meet the target of vaccinating or offering the vaccines to as many people as possible in the summer timeframe or by fall.”
