Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott said on Tuesday that they were working to determine how to prioritize who gets the COVID-19 vaccine first in the province, saying they were setting up a task force that would include a bioethicist to help in the process. She said the most vulnerable residents and health care workers are top of any possible prioritization.

Elliott made the comments during an update on the province's COVID-19 situation, alongside the chair of the COVID-19 Vaccine Distribution Task Force Gen. Rick Hillier (retired) and Solicitor General Sylvia Jones.

Hillier said that if there is a slight delay for when the country receives a COVID-19 vaccine and other countries such as the U.S. starts vaccinations before Canada, it provides an opportunity to learn from their experiences and determine how they can do better.

When asked if a COVID-19 vaccine would be made mandatory for people in certain professions such as front-line workers, Elliott said that the Ford government has made it clear that they want vaccinations to be done voluntarily.

Ontario reported 1,707 new cases of coronavirus on Tuesday, bringing the provincial total to 118,199.
