Ontario Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister Christine Elliott said Wednesday that the decision not to implement a mandatory COVID-19 vaccine policy for hospital workers is the “right decision for right now,” based on a risk assessment.

Elliott said they assessed the situation in other provinces that have mandated COVID-19 vaccines, finding that in B.C. it resulted in cancelled surgeries and that in Quebec the province is reassessing its vaccine policy.

Elliott said they did not want to have to cancel surgeries in the province, and were concerned that they would have to do so if they implemented a mandatory vaccine policy that led to a loss in hospital staff.

Despite this decision by the province, several hospitals have already implemented their own mandates and have seen roughly two per cent of staff placed on unpaid leave or terminated because of the policies.
