Quebec Premier François Legault said on Monday that he was "truly touched" by Quebecers showing solidarity in following COVID-19 measures, including the recently introduced curfew, even as some protests occurred when it took effect. He went on to express the importance of the measures in terms of protecting people, especially, he said, given 51 deaths from COVID-19 were reported that day.

The briefing comes as the province reports 1,869 new cases and 51 deaths due to the coronavirus. Of the deaths, 18 occurred in the past 24 hours, while others were retroactively added. Hospitalizations continue to rise in the province, with 56 more people in hospital, bringing the total to 1,436. There are 211 people in intensive care.

Health Minister Christian Dubé said on Monday that they were on track to meet their goal of 250,000 people vaccinated with the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine by Feb. 8.

Legault also addressed the recent return to school by students. He said he was happy to see students returning to school but addressed concerns over that return, saying it was a "calculated risk" because there were other risks if they did not return. He added they recognize the concerns of university and college students as well, the frustration being unable to see friends, and are looking into whether students in postsecondary can return to in-class learning in the future.

Despite the return to school, however, Legault stressed the same age group must not go see family members 65 years of age and older due to the still potential risk associated with COVID-19 and older age groups.
