Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in Toronto, Ont., on Thursday that as the federal government moves forward with national single-payer pharmacare, the programme will cover two specific areas of medications.

“First is contraceptives, making sure that women right across this country can choose when they want to start a family, have power over their path, whatever their path is, and not have cost, be a barrier to that,” Trudeau said. “Second, we're moving forward on diabetes medications because we know that it's a huge issue faced by millions of Canadians.”

Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland and Minister for Women and Gender Equality Marci Ien also spoke about the importance of supporting women’s health-care ahead of International Women’s Day, and paid tribute to notable women in Canadian healthcare throughout the country’s history.

During the question and answer period, Trudeau also said that he reacted with “shock and horror” at news of a homicide in Ottawa that left six dead, that the government will not be making any announcement regarding the status of funding to United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and reiterated his support for Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig.
