Dr. Supriya Sharma, Health Canada’s chief medical advisor, said Friday that more than one million bottles of children’s acetaminophen and ibuprofen will have been brought into Canada to supply hospitals, pharmacies and retail stores after next week and that products would “start appearing on store shelves” early next week.

Sharma said foreign products will be accompanied by information about the product, including tear sheets and QR codes.

Parents have been grappling with a shortage of children’s liquid acetaminophen and ibuprofen since last spring, exacerbated by a surge in influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections alongside the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Sharma said hospitals have already received shipments and that Health Canada has found supply there is already “quite stable.” She added that manufacturers have ramped up production but demand has still outstripped supply.
