Canada’s Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos provided an update on Friday on the progress in procuring more children’s medications amid shortages and an increase in flu, RSV and COVID-19 cases.

Duclos said manufacturers have stepped up domestic production to meet needs, with some companies producing twice as many units as they did in the same time last year.

During the month of November only, a total of 1.1 million units of children’s Advil products have been made available for the Canadian market.

This is in addition to the one million units announced last week, which are being distributed across Canada and an additional importation of half-a-million units scheduled for the next three weeks.

Chief Public Health Officer of Canada Dr. Theresa Tam said that since last week’s update, RSV activity has levelled off somewhat, but likely to remain elevated for weeks to come. Influenza is showing a steep rise in activity, with all surveillance indicators increasing and trending above expected levels at this time of the year.

She added that numbers of hospitalizations in pediatric hospitals related to the flu are what’s usually seen at the peak of the flu season, and that people should expect a high number of flu infections among all ages for many weeks to come.
