Officials urge Canadians to get COVID-19 booster, warn about increase in cases come fall | FULL

Canada’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Theresa Tam and Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos urged Canadians to get a booster shot on Thursday.

On Wednesday, the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) recommended a fourth dose of the COVID-19 vaccine for anyone 65 years of age and older or individuals 12 years of age and older with an underlying medical condition.

Dr. Tam said Thursday that Omicron subvariants BA.4 and BA.5 are becoming more dominant in Canada, which she said is likely to lead to an increase in COVID-19 cases in the fall.

While Health Canada has yet to receive data on new variants targeting Omicron subvariants specifically, Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos said Ottawa is “very actively working” with Moderna and Pfizer to be ready for new formulations of the COVID-19 vaccine.

He said the contracts already in place with these companies mean Canada will have access to the most up-to-date vaccines.
