Canada's deputy chief public health officer Dr. Howard Njoo said Tuesday that more than 57 per cent of eligible Canadians 12 and older have been fully vaccinated with two COVID-19 vaccine doses, with almost 80 per cent having also received at least one dose.

Njoo made the announcement during a federal health update alongside Brig.-Gen. Krista Brodie who is leading the vaccine distribution effort, Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic LeBlanc, and Joelle Paquette from Public Services and Procurement Canada.

Njoo added that among those surveyed in June, 84 to 88 per cent said they had received or plan to get a dose.

With school about seven weeks away from returning, he also issued a "call to arms," stressing that youth and younger age groups were important to the vaccine rollout and urged them to book an appointment for a first or second dose before September if possible.

Brodie said that they would be receiving 7.1 million COVID-19 vaccine doses this week and expect to pass 66 million doses next week, which she said will "signal that there are sufficient doses in country to vaccinate every currently eligible Canadian."
