The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) says it is trying to determine the number of Canadians struggling with "long COVID": COVID-19 that lingers long past the initial point of infection, sometimes indefinitely.
Chief Public Health Officer of Canada Dr. Theresa Tam said during a news conference Friday that people who are experiencing new or persistent symptoms three to four months after the initial infection could be suffering from long COVID.
"Currently the most commonly reported symptoms include fatigue, cognitive problems, sleep disturbances and shortness of breath among other symptoms," Tam said.
Tam added that "studies from the pre-Omicron period suggest that approximately thirty to forty per cent of individuals who were not hospitalized for the initial COVID-19 infection still had one or more symptoms twelve weeks after the acute infection."
Also, Dr. Tam confirmed 58 cases of monkeypox as of June 3. Of those cases, 52 were in Quebec, five in Ontario, and one from Alberta.
