Since last week, Canada has seen an 11 per cent increase in COVID-19 cases, announced the country's top doctor Theresa Tam on Friday. Health officials expected "turbulence" with the pandemic due to "bumps" in the case trajectory seen in the modelling data.
In addition, Health Canada chief medical adviser Dr. Supriya Sharma said Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine is expected to be approved for use of children under 12 within one or two weeks.
This comes as Tam said children under the age of 12 continue to have the highest infection rates of COVID-19 across all age groups in Canada.
On Wednesday, Canada added 2,576 COVID-19 cases and 33 deaths.
That marks an increase of seven per cent in the rolling seven-day average of cases in the country compared to a week earlier, according to Tam.
Health Canada has authorized a booster dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for all adults 18 and older, making official what some provinces were already doing with regard to boosters.
