World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Monday that the world has finally seen a decrease in COVID-19 cases over the last week for the first time since September.

He said the decrease comes as a result of the lockdowns that have been implemented in European countries in recent weeks, but warned that many other regions of the world are still facing increased infections and deaths due to the virus.

Tedros discussed the upcoming holiday season during Monday’s press conference and asked people to carefully consider non-essential travel and large indoor gatherings.

He called on people celebrating to avoid more than one household gathering together and to follow their countries’ COVID-19 guidance.

Ahead of World AIDS Day on Tuesday, Tedros said the pandemic has affected delivery of treatments to HIV patients and there is some evidence that COVID-19 may cause severe outcomes and deaths for HIV patients.

The world has a total of 62.8 million cases and over 40 million recoveries.
