Chief medical officer of health, Dr. Theresa Tam offered some positive news on Canada's COVID-19 outlook saying the country is well past its third peak on Friday.
Tam said average case counts are now less than half of what they were during the peak of the third wave with under 3,400 cases reported daily over the last seven days.
Tam also said "the latest seven day average for the people with COVID-19 being treated in hospitals each day has dropped 34 per cent since peak activity."
Vaccination numbers have more than doubled since late April when 10 million people had at least one dose, to more than 22 million with one dose, or about 62 per cent of adults, to date according to Tam.
New national data shows just how well COVID-19 vaccines are working to bring down the severity of the third wave in Canada.
Based on data provided by the provinces and territories up to May 25, only 0.15 per cent of vaccinated Canadians became infected by the virus 14 days or more after their first dose.
“Compared to unvaccinated cases in these jurisdictions, these people were more likely to report no symptoms and less likely to experience severe illness requiring hospitalization,” Tam said during the federal COVID-19 briefing.
