Senior public health officials with the government of Canada provided an update on Thursday on the country's current fight against COVID-19, and the ongoing vaccination campaign.

Deputy chief public health officer Dr. Howard Njoo told the Ottawa news conference that the current daily COVID-19 case count is down 95 per cent from the peak of the third wave.

Seventy-nine per cent of Canadians have had at least one shot and the number of people aged 12 and older who have had both shots has risen from 44 to more than 52 per cent in the past week.

Meanwhile, Canada's deputy chief public health officer was sounding positive about the Toronto Blue Jays' return to Canadian soil.

Dr. Njoo said there has been many discussions between the Blue Jays organization and the government over the team's application for a so-called "National Interest Exemption" to Canada's COVID-19 travel restrictions.

Njoo said he couldn't provide a date on when an announcement would be made.
