Canada's Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam released on Friday the latest COVID-19 modelling data, which projects the country could see 20,000 COVID-19 cases daily by the end of December if no contact reduction measures are taken.

The new modelling data predicts the number of cases could be between 366,000 and 378,000 until Nov.30, 10 days from now.

It also says the projected deaths could be between 11,800 and 12,100 in the next 10 days.

Dr. Tam said there are indications that the country is not testing enough, calling for health officials across provinces to increase testing and contact tracing.

According to the World Health Organization, countries should maintain a test positivity rate under 5% while Canada’s is now above 6.5%, indicating that transmission is increasing and so should testing.

During the press conference, Health Minister Patty Hajdu said that Pfizer has applied for Health Canada’s emergency-use approval of its COVID-19 vaccine candidate and is currently pending a “rolling review” process.

Canada surpassed 300,000 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus earlier this week.
