During a COVID-19 briefing on Wednesday, Toronto's chief medical officer of health Dr. Eileen de Villa reported 1,069 new COVID-19 cases and four new deaths. Dr. de Villa said Wednesday’s cases are a record high for the second day in a row.

Dr. Eileen de Villa stated she is “not convinced” that the recently reported COVID-19 cases are connected to the holidays, as cases are often confirmed “many days after infection."

"it is now reasonable that we should brace for an extended period of potentially unsettling and discouraging numbers" of COVID-19 infections in Toronto, she said.

"We have no choice but to resolve to keep apart as much as possible," Dr. de Villa added.

Ontario reported 2,923 new cases of the coronavirus on Wednesday, another new record for cases within 24 hours. The provincial total now stands at 178,831.
