Alberta has seen its first suspected cases of in-school transmission of a COVID-19 variant. Alberta chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw made the announcement on Wednesday during her daily update.

“We were informed today that there are now two cases of variant COVID-19 where in-school transmission is likely the source,” Hinshaw announced.

Hinshaw said she was aware of seven classes in six schools overall where variant cases attended while infectious. This is the first time that Alberta Health Services identified spread in those locations. Both cases were within the same class.

The province identified 16 new cases of the COVID-19 variant on Wednesday.

Alberta recorded 339 new cases of COVID-19 and 6 COVID-related deaths as well.

421 Albertans are hospitalized with the disease, 77 patients are in the ICU.
