Alberta Premier Jason Kenney announced on Monday that the Omicron coronavirus variant has not been identified in the province yet but measures are being implemented to reduce any chance of spread.

The new measures include full case investigations, contact notifications for all COVID-19 cases in returning international travelers and PCR testing for all closed contacts and rapid testing for households in specific settings like schools and child care settings.

Alberta Health Minister Jason Copping also updated the provinces mandatory vaccination requirement for AHS employees.

Copping announced that he has directed AHS to introduce rapid COVID-19 testing at locations where there is a significant risk of a severe service disruption due to unvaccinated employees.

Copping said that this new requirement was "in the interest of protecting patient care."

AHS President Dr. Verna Yiu announced that 96% of staff and 99.5% of physicians are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
