Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Tuesday that the current COVID-19 restrictions must remain in place until cases go “way down” past where they are now. He added people will be able to enjoy summer, but only with more vaccine shots in the arms and lower cases.

Trudeau laid out his hopes for what he called a “one-dose summer” and a “two-dose fall,” where students can go back to schools and more normal life can return.

Two conditions must be met for normal life to remain: At least 75 per cent of Canadians must be vaccinated with their first shot, and cases must become lower.

Health Canada's top doctor says national trends are slowly declining but some areas in the country are still experiencing ongoing resurgences.

On Monday, Canada reported its lowest number of new daily COVID-19 cases since early April, as the total number of infections in the country hit 1,294,195.

Health officials across the country said 6,322 new cases of the novel coronavirus were detected, marking the lowest increase since April 5 when 6,264 new infections were reported.
