Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced more military support for Ukraine on Friday as the world marked the first year of Russia's invasion of the eastern European country, with four more Leopard-2 tanks among the arms being sent.
Trudeau was joined by Defence Minister Anita Anand and Etobicoke Centre MP Yvan Baker.
The prime minister spoke about the ongoing war, commending Ukrainians for their ongoing fight with Russia and the courage he said they've shown, while criticizing Russian President Vladimir Putin for starting the war, calling him "cowardly" and "weak."
Anand also took time to praise Ukrainians, saying they were not only fighting for their country, but "fighting for democracy itself."
On Friday, the government announced more than $32 million in security support for Ukraine, as G7 nations are readying a fresh round of sanctions on Russia. Roughly $9.7 million of the funding announced stems from Trudeau's $151.7-million support package announced in June 2022. $7.5 million will go towards demining efforts, $13 million for "accountability efforts" including addressing conflict-related sexual violence, and $12 million to counter chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats.
Trudeau then took questions from reporters, and stressed they would work to combat misinformation campaigns by Russia both in Canada and abroad by ensuring proper information is communicated and supporting journalists reporting the truth.
Earlier in the day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made a televised address, saying Ukraine "will never rest until the Russian murderers face deserved punishment."
At a ceremony, he awarded medals to the fighters defending Ukraine against Russia's aggression and pledged victory for his country in 2023.
