Speaking at the launch for the $4-billion Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF) initiative in Guelph, Ont., on Friday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau defended his decision to appoint former Gov.-Gen. David Johnston as the “special rapporteur” to investigate allegations of foreign interference in Canadian elections.
Trudeau announced the decision on Wednesday, and Johnston says he will have a hand in determining his own mandate as special rapporteur on foreign interference in the recent federal elections.
After the RCMP named Michael Duheme as the new interim commissioner to replace Brenda Lucki, Trudeau said that police services with the right safety and structure are needed to protect Canadians, especially in light of the recent fatal attacks on Edmonton police.
