Following special rapporteur David Johnston's recommendation to hold public hearings rather than an inquiry into allegations of foreign interference, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told reporters that he would abide by Johnston’s direction.

The 81-year-old former Governor General made the recommendation Tuesday after being given two months to do so by Trudeau in March. However, he said letters had been sent to party leaders offering the necessary security clearances to view the intelligence Johnson’s report is based on. He said Johnston had been given “complete access” to relevant documents and had spoken to MPs, senior officials and security experts.

Trudeau said he has “total confidence” in Johnston’s ability to continue investigating allegations of foreign interference.
