Blair updates progress on Canada-wide public alert system, talks foreign election interference |FULL

Federal Emergency Preparedness Minister Bill Blair spoke Friday about discussions with his counterparts of a national public alerting system for emergencies, saying it was in progress, though he could not give a specific timeline.

He said they needed to determine standards for the system, and ensure each province and territory is able to integrate it, adding it's important to provide proper information and not send out so many alerts that people ignore them.

Blair also said he could confirm he has not been advised that the 2019 or 2021 federal elections were compromised amid reports of foreign interference, but the concern still exists. He said while reports show it was 11 specific ridings targeted out of 338, the small number does not minimize how the government is handling the situation, saying it informs their decisions going forward.
