Canada's Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre said that he doesn’t “trust” special rapporteur David Johnston to hold public hearings into allegations of foreign election interference in Canadian elections, after Johnston announced his recommendation against a public inquiry.

“We don't trust David Johnston to do public hearings because he is a family friend, cottage neighbor and ski buddy of the prime minister. He's also part of the Trudeau Foundation,” Poilievre said in his remarks. “He is not impartial. He needs to get out of the way and allow for a full public inquiry so that we can get to the bottom of Beijing's interference in our democracy.”

Previously, Poilievre has said Johnston's role was a "fake job" and that he had sent a letter to him asking how he could independently investigate the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation, of which Johnston had been a member.
