Emergency Preparedness Minister Bill Blair rebuked allegations made by some political opponents that the Liberals interfered in the Nova Scotia mass shooting investigation to forward their proposed gun control legislation. He said Monday that no one in the federal government had requested the types of guns used to be made publicly available, nor did RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki promise they would be.
The committee voted last week to recall them both after audio recordings of a meeting between Lucki and several of her subordinates was released and has been at the centre of a firestorm ever since members of Nova Scotia RCMP accused the commissioner of pressuring them to release details about the gunman's weapons. They claimed Lucki had told them during the April 28 meeting she "promised" Blair and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau this information would be shared publicly and that the promise was connected to gun control legislation the Liberals wanted to put forward.
At several points in the call, Lucki said she was "disappointed" details about the firearms used by the gunman weren't publicly released despite her asking them to be. At no point during the audio recordings, however, did Lucki say she was ordered or pressured to release details about the gunman's weapons by anyone in the government - an assertion made by political opponents who have accused the Liberals with interfering.
Responding to questions about the recordings on Monday, Lucki said the recording content was not only about the types of weapons used and dealt with various topics, but also rebuked questions about whether the federal government had requested she make the types of weapons used in the Nova Scotia mass shooting publicly available.
