U.S. President Joe Biden said on Tuesday that he’s “determined” to ensure the completion of the U.S. evacuation mission from Afghanistan by Aug. 31 after he met with his G7 counterparts and officials from the NATO and the European Union.

Biden said the U.S. had evacuated over 75,000 Americans so far, and is “on pace” to complete the mission by the deadline previously announced.

He added that he’s mindful of the increasing risks of terrorist attacks on the airport in Kabul the longer the mission takes, and said the completion depends on Taliban’s cooperation and allowing access to the airport.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who hosted the summit, and France’s Emmanuel Macron were among those calling for an extension in order to more fully evacuate all foreign nationals and vulnerable Afghans who helped the Americans and the NATO allies before the country’s recent fall to the Taliban.

Canada is one of a dozen allied countries taking part in the evacuation of people facing Taliban reprisals from Kabul’s chaotic airport, which American-led forces have secured for the time being.
