Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino announced on Tuesday that Canada has reached an agreement with the United States to accept 5,000 Afghan refugees evacuated by American forces.

“These refugees will be accepted as part of Canada’s recently announced humanitarian resettlement program," he said.

The Taliban held full control of Kabul’s international airport Tuesday after the last U.S. plane left its runway, marking the end of America’s longest war and leaving behind a now-quiet airfield and Afghans outside it still hoping to flee the insurgents’ rule.

Mendicino added that Canada has received assurances from the Taliban that refugees and nationals would be allowed to leave Afghanistan now that Western forces are gone.

Canada evacuated roughly 3,700 people from Afghanistan during its efforts and expanded its humanitarian program to welcome 20,000 refugees.
