U.S. President Joe Biden addressed the nation on Tuesday about the decision not to extend its time in Afghanistan and the way forward after 20 years of war in the county.

The last Air Force transport plane departed Kabul one minute before midnight Monday, local time, raising questions about why Biden didn't continue the airlift for at least another day. He had set Tuesday as the deadline for ending the evacuation and pulling out remaining troops after the Taliban took over the country.

The president said he takes ultimate responsibility for the decision to leave as Commander-in-Chief. Biden cited former president Donald Trump's May 1st agreement, saying the deal gave him two choices, to either withdraw by Aug. 31 or add more troops and escalate the situation in the country. Biden says he chose the former.

Despite the withdrawal, however, Biden is still facing heavy criticism as in addition to some Afghans who had helped the U.S. and allies during the war, Americans were also left behind.

Biden said that U.S. forces had evacuated 90 per cent of Americans in Afghanistan who wanted out and would continue to work to get the remainder out, estimating there were 100 to 200 "with some intention to leave."

The Taliban held full control of Kabul’s international airport Tuesday after the last U.S. plane left its runway, marking the end of America’s longest war and leaving behind a now-quiet airfield and Afghans outside it still hoping to flee the insurgents’ rule.
