International donors have pledged more than $1.1 billion to help Afghanistan, where poverty and hunger have spiraled since the Taliban took power, and foreign aid has dried up, raising the specter of a mass exodus.

During a U.N. conference seeking $606 million to meet Afghanistan's most pressing needs, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said it was too early to say how much had been specifically promised by countries in response to the appeal.

After decades of war and suffering, Afghans are facing "perhaps their most perilous hour," he said, and expressed his concern about the risk of the country's economy collapsing.

"My appeal to the international community is to find ways to allow for an injection of cash in the Afghan economy, allowing the economy to breathe, and avoiding a collapse that would have devastating consequences," Guterres stated.

The Taliban swept back to power last month in a lightning advance as the last U.S.-led NATO troops pulled out and the forces of the Western-backed government melted away.
