Speaking at the Pentagon in Washington, DC on Friday, United States Army Maj. Gen. William "Hank" Taylor confirmed that there was just one suicide bomber - at the airport gate in Kabul - not two, as U.S. officials initially said.

The Kabul airport attack on Thursday, which has now confirmed to have killed 14 U.S. troops and over 100 people in total, was claimed by Islamic State militants. The Islamic State's Afghan affiliate, ISIS-Khorosan, has emerged as enemies of both the West and of the Taliban.

Maj. Gen. Taylor also outlined the scale and progress of U.S. evacuation efforts in the past twenty four hours, involving dozens of flights into and out of Kabul's airport.

Tens of thousands of people have been fleeing Afghanistan since the Taliban came to power as foreign forces withdraw.

Over the last week, the airport has been the scene of some of the most searing images of the chaotic end of America’s longest war and the Taliban’s takeover, as flight after flight took off carrying those who fear a return to the militants’ rule.
