U.S. President Joe Biden said Thursday the country was still on track to meet its deadline to withdraw military troops from Afghanistan by Sept. 11, a goal set by the president in April, but he went further saying the mission would come to an end August 31.
Last week, the U.S. abandoned Bagram air base, the longtime staging grounds for military operations in the country, effectively ending America's longest war. The Pentagon says the withdrawal of U.S. forces is 90 per cent complete.
In defending his decision to withdraw, despite numerous lawmakers advising they stay longer, Biden said recent history has shown each time it was argued to stay six more months or one more year, "we kept fighting, we kept taking casualties."
"Nearly 20 years of experience has shown us, that the current security situation only confirms that just one more year of fighting in Afghanistan is not a solution, but a recipe for being there indefinitely," he said. "It's up to the Afghans to make the decision about the future of their country."
The president also said that the U.S. would accelerate the Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) application process to help those who aided the U.S., like interpreters and other Afghans, to come to the country.
"There is a home for you in the United States if you so choose and we will stand with you as you stood with us," Biden said.
