Addressing the security situation in Afghanistan, U.S. President Joe Biden on Monday said that recent events prove that “no amount of military force” would deliver a secure Afghanistan.
He said he would “not mislead the American people” about what the U.S. military could achieve in Afghanistan if given more time.
Biden said the U.S. response would be “swift and forceful” if the Taliban targeted Americans or disrupted U.S. operations as it works to evacuate its people. He also said the Afghan government had asked the U.S. not to start evacuations earlier to avoid a “crisis in confidence.”
Biden said exiled President Ashraf Ghani had “insisted Afghan forces would fight” but that recent events have proven he was wrong.
